  • Reading

At Cranbourne, we recognise the value in both reading for purpose and reading for pleasure. The ability to read is fundamental to the success of every subject we study at school and shapes student's ability to thrive in the future.

    The School Library

The library is open to students during break and lunchtimes, where they are able to find a quiet space to read, explore the books in our library and socialise with their peers. There are currently over 7000 books in stock, available for students to borrow. Loans are for 2 weeks.

    Reading Ambassadors

Our Reading Ambassadors are passionate about all things reading and love immersing themselves in the world of books. Each week, they meet with Miss Bessmertna and pick their book of the week.

    Their responsibilities include:

    • Improving our library and choosing new books
    • Sharing book reviews and recommendations
    • Inspiring students to pick up a book and read
    Reading in PDL

We read as a whole group in tutor time. There is a broad range of books being read across the whole school most mornings, from the classics to some contemporary authors, such as Charlie Higson and Matt Haig.

    Accelerated Reader
Our school library is the hub of our Accelerated Reader activities. Accelerated Reader (commonly referred to as AR in school) is a software based system, which is particularly good for encouraging those children who are less engaged with reading. After an initial assessment, each child gains a reading book level. They are then guided on how to check whether a book is within their book level (books at home that they child wishes to read are equally available for checking on the system, as those in the library. This programme never seeks to limit a child’s reading. They are then encouraged and supported to start reading! Once they finish a book, they can then log in to AR and find the quiz associated with that book. Children who are already engaged in books and reading are equally encouraged, and find as much pleasure from taking part in the quizzes.

All students in Year 7 and in Year 8 are enrolled into the programme. All of the students in these year groups visit the library for a timetabled lesson once a fortnight (sometimes more). House points are won in all kinds of ways throughout the programme, to ensure that all children are equally encouraged and involved in the challenges set by the library.
