History at Cranbourne intends to give all students the opportunity and potential to think and work as a Historian. This requires them to gain both a vast acquisition of knowledge across different periods but also the wide variety of skills used by Historians including describing, explaining, analysing and interpreting the past.
Throughout KS3 and KS4, students are provided with opportunities to develop an understanding of chronology, cause and consequences, change and continuity, significance, the ability to interpret and the ability to analyse sources. The KS3 curriculum underpins the historical knowledge to provide a secure foundation for KS4 but also a strong understanding of both British and world History.
By providing students with a thorough grounding in History, we aim to enable them to see their place in the context of History and understand what has led us to be where we are now in society. Students are taken through the Norman Conquest to the age of Elizabethan exploration, then via the British Empire through two world wars up to the Modern day.
The skills we teach go far beyond the ability to simply analyse a source for strengths and limitations or recall facts. We teach them not to take the world they live in at face value. It is a world where students have access to so many forms of information at their fingertips. It is therefore more important than ever to teach students how to make informed decisions about the world they live in. This is paramount for whatever life or career choices they make when they leave Cranbourne.
