Textiles at Cranbourne is a highly enjoyable, rewarding, creative subject where practical activities are the central part of learning. Within Textiles students are given the opportunity to express their creativity and equip themselves with a range of life skills. Our aim is to inspire and challenge students to try new skills while encouraging confidence and independence. Students demonstrate this though personal organisation, ability to think ahead, to plan projects efficiently, decision making and by evaluating their work. Resilience and problem solving are essential skills for students to reach their full potential.
Students begin by learning key skills, starting with basic hand sewing moving their way through to decorative machine work. We focus on learning both construction and aesthetic techniques required in the fashion and textiles industry such as a hem, seam, zip insertion and more complex techniques such as quilting and entrapment. Students also focus on surface design though various print and dying methods. Projects take inspiration from a variety of different artists, cultures, ethic backgrounds and environmental features to deliver a broad curriculum.
At GCSE we follow the OCR textiles course which forms part of the Art specification and allows students to have creative freedom along with independence which develops their skills learnt at KS3. Students work along side a theme and develop their own ideas referencing artist research, resulting in original and varied outcomes. Students can work in a variety of areas creating final pieces that explore a range of textile outcomes including, costume design, installation pieces, interior design, surface design, printing, fashion and textiles pieces. All final pieces show a confident understanding of visual elements though the sampling and design process.
