PE at Cranbourne aims to give a wide range of opportunities to all students to access all parts of the curriculum. Students will partake in Swimming (life skill), Health Related Fitness, Invasion Games, Gymnastics, Net and Wall Games, Striking and Fielding and Athletics.
The key aims for PE at Key Stage 3 are for the students to be involved and partake in physical activity that is inspiring and competitive and help them to achieve an active and healthy lifestyle. Students are enabled to demonstrate a range of skills across the topic areas and apply these in a variety of sports. Our teachers are keen to provide our students with a broad curriculum that gives them the opportunity to provides sports and activities that will support the individual needs of our pupils within our class. This allows our teachers to play to pupil strengths and supporting progress for all.
At Key Stage 4, enjoyment of activity and participation are the main aims of PE and we continue to apply key skills and tactics through a game environment. Students and teachers collaboratively decide which activities or sports they would like to engage in, allowing student to be independent learner within decision making. This means that they are more likely to participate with others and enjoy their physical activity.
The key aims of the National Curriculum are taught, plus encouraging our student to apply their sporting knowledge to other roles like coaching, mentoring and officiating. Finally, by providing a motivating, collaborative and engaging environment for all students to enjoy, will encourage physical activity post 16, as they will have the knowledge and understanding of the importance of participating in physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
BTEC Sport at Cranbourne aims to give as many students as possible a pathway into a sporting career. We teach BTEC as it suits our learners the best due to the fact that it is mainly coursework based – this gives us more teaching time and we are able to produce high quality coursework rather than relying on practical performance (elitist) and linear exams. The BTEC Sport course allows all students to access the KS4 Qualification and has produced excellent results for the school. We intend for the number of students taking the course to be enough for at least 2 class groups.
Our intent for extra-curricular is to offer students as many different opportunities as possible and to compete in as many different intra-school competitions as possible. Some of our extra-curricular club are invitation only so that we can offer opportunities for specific students to support individual needs such as, swimming lesson for our non-swimmers, ASD/SEMH fitness and alternative sports. This means that our enrichment programme has something for everyone.
We also offer extra-curricular clubs to give students the opportunity to take part in activities that they may not have access to outside of school (Athletics, Basketball). Furthermore, use extra-curricular opportunities for personal development by giving selected students the opportunity to become Sports Leaders, where they are able to attend Primary School Sports Days – this also benefits the schools networking and transition programmes.
Overall, we provide a range of extra-curricular clubs and opportunities for our students to participant in, so that they can offer a rich PE curriculum that all students can enjoy throughout their journey at Cranbourne.
